A unique new shop has opened at 1306 W. Second St. in Ottumwa. Botanitas Isa-Aby’s is a Mexican snack and Ice-cream shop. Fresh fruits and desserts are available every day. All food is prepared from fresh products. There is Three-Milk (tres leches) cake, chicharrones preparados, corn on the cob, strawberries and cream, and much more! Twelve flavors of Blue Bunny ice cream are served.
The owner, Sandra Espinoza, has lived in Ottumwa for 20 years. She got the idea for the shop from Mexico. In Mexico, street vendors sell snack foods that are unique to the culture. Sandra decided to bring the food of street vendors to Ottumwa for everyone to enjoy. Sandra prepares delicious “esquites,” seasoned corn in a cup with mayo, cheese, and chili pepper. Served hot.
Her most popular item is the slushy. She makes the flavorings from fresh pineapple, coconut, papaya, mango, etc. She puts the ingredients into a machine that adds ice, and you have a quenching, slushy drink.
She also serves several fresh fruit dishes. “Crazy Watermelon” (sandia loca) is a hollowed-out watermelon stuffed with a variety of fresh fruits, nuts, and special sauces. Another favorite is “Chicharrones Preparados.” It is made with Mexican crunch shell, topped with avocado, tomato, sour cream, pork skins, cabbage, and topped off with salsa. Delicious!
The name of the shop, Botanitas Isa-Aby’s, is an abbreviation of her two daughters’ first names – Isabel and Abigail. The word “botanitas” roughly translates to “cravings” or “snacks.”
Botanitas Isa-Aby’s is located next to Jack Blackwell Tire at 1306 West Second Street. The store is open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. everyday except Sunday when hours are 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed on Thursdays.

Sandra owns the business and works everyday in the store preparing great eats. Her oldest daughter, Aby, takes orders and runs the cash register. Isabel, the youngest, takes food orders to the taco trailer outside where Sandra's husband, Eduardo, cooks delicious tacos, tortas, quesadillas, and burritos.
